A varicocele is a condition in which veins within the scrotum become enlarged due to poor blood flow, similar to varicose veins in the legs. This can lead to discomfort, a feeling of heaviness, or fertility issues in some men. At North County Vascular & Interventional (NCVI), our board certified interventional radiologists offer varicocele embolization, a minimally invasive alternative to surgery that effectively treats the condition with faster recovery and no surgical incisions.
No surgical incisions in the scrotum or groin, and no general anesthesia required. Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two.
Varicocele embolization is an image guided, outpatient procedure designed to close off the abnormal veins and redirect blood flow to healthy pathways. On the day of treatment, patients receive light sedation for comfort. A small catheter is inserted through a tiny nick in the skin, usually in the neck or groin, and guided into the affected testicular vein using real time imaging.
Once in place, specialized embolization materials, such as tiny coils or a sclerosant agent, are used to seal the malfunctioning vein. Because varicocele embolization is minimally invasive, it requires no surgical incision in the sensitive scrotal area.
This procedure usually takes under an hour, and patients go home the same day. Your doctor will help determine if embolization is the right treatment option based on your symptoms and medical history.
Varicocele embolization is performed through a tiny nick in the skin, meaning there are no incisions or stitches required in the scrotum or groin. This significantly reduces the risk of infection and eliminates surgical scarring.
Most patients return to normal daily activities within one to two days of the procedure. Because there is no general anesthesia or major surgery involved, post procedural downtime is minimal, allowing you to get back to your routine quickly.
Patients typically notice a reduction in scrotal pain and heaviness shortly after the procedure. For men experiencing fertility issues related to varicoceles, embolization can help improve the environment for sperm production by reducing venous pressure and temperature in the scrotum.
Recovery is generally quick and comfortable. Some patients may experience mild soreness at the catheter insertion site for a few days, which can easily be managed with over the counter medications. Our team provides clear post procedure instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
